Family ties and friendship focus of Russian Festival

Running through the festival was the theme of family and friends coming together to celebrate their culture. The volunteers at the arts and crafts tables proudly talked about how their grandmothers had taught them how to color eggs and weave cloth. Overwhelmingly, there was a feeling of traditional bonds being held onto tightly - traditions that were honored and carefully kept.

Daria, one of the Sisterhood's leaders, explained that the proceeds of the festival went to the maintenance of the church, the pastor's salary, various charities in Russia and to providing for the nunnery next-door.

The nunnery is home to one nun who could be seen sporadically walking through the festival in her long, dark habit. To provide for herself and her life of prayer, she sells lovely Russian silk prayer necklaces and exquisitely painted wooden books.

"When you want to show someone your culture, your faith, you show yourself at your best. You show them your clothes, your food, your art," Daria said. Truly, the Russian Festival portrayed their homeland for the 34th time wonderfully - and will be back to do it again next year.
