The Nobel Peace Prize: A Recognition of Hope or Premature Prognostication?

Obama: Nobel or No go?

Indeed, the joint statement they delivered on Sept. 25, accusing Iran of building a second underground nuclear plant in Qom, was covering up some major disagreements from the United Nations a few days earlier.

Sarkozy in particular was in favor of presenting the new information about Iran at the United Nations (at a meeting Obama was chairing to discuss nuclear proliferation of all things).

However, as a leading French official recently told Le Monde, Sarkozy was compelled by the Administration to remove his remarks on the subject in order to preserve Obama's image of success at his debut U.N. meeting and to deliver his homely calling for nuclear disarmament.

Thus, the Iran "bombshell" was dropped the following day at the G-20, which was meant to discuss the global economic climate (some serious razzledazzing if I ever saw it) much to the chagrin of Obama's European counterparts.

Why wouldn't they be upset? They were bullied into tactically delaying revealing important facts in order to preserve Obama's image, so that he might be more effective delivering an idealistic speech that would detract from the actual issues at hand, and distract from the gravity of the situation.

On the one hand, he has to convince China and Russia, who will agree to sanctions so long as they don't involve anything heavy handed enough so as to actually lead to consequences. Then, on the other side, he has the U.S., France's ally, who for all their talk about an ideal world without nuclear warfare, offers no plans for practical protection.

I hope that Obama's negotiations prove fruitful, but he has a lot to contend with. If he had inherited the office eight years ago, or even four, we would be looking at a very different situation. Unfortunately, it seems too late to rally a global movement with words. If Iran gets nuclear weapons, it will be a matter of years until the Middle East completely disintegrates -- fewer if the situation in Israel continues to escalate.
